Camera Movement And Editing Blog Tasks

 1) Pick three aspects of camera movement in the clip. Identify the type of camera movement and write about why the director chose to use that camera movement in the scene and what effect it has on the audience.

In the beginning of the scene the camera movement is slow yet sharp which can connote that something is going to pop up this creates suspense for the audience and intrigues us into the scene.

The camera movement at 1:07 is a crane shot allows the camera to move smoothly above the character introducing the setting and creating a suspenseful scene as the speed of the scene increases gradually.

At 0:18 there is a pan, this is when a man on the train is holding a newspaper with the man who is being hunted, a pan between the realization of a man who’s being hunted and a civilian on the same bus, in fact in close proximity, the suspense is created through the quick movement in the pan. The placement of the two characters in addition to the cut makes it seem as if there is an unseen link between the characters.

2) Pick two aspects of editing in the clip and write about what effect it has on the audience.

In the beginning there isn't much happening in the scene so the editing is at a slow pace to build tension however when the precrime division locate him towards the middle the pace of editing is suddenly accelerates which is a key concept of the genre as this usually done in action movies to show how much tension the character is experiencing.

3) Finally, revise last week's work on camerawork by picking out two shots or camera angles in the clip that communicate meaning to the audience.

The eye line match at 0:34 allows the audience to feel the emotion which the protagonist is feeling when he is found by his squad. The two shots perfectly match as they are at the same height and position. This match is accompanied by heart pumping music and faster camera work. which all build suspense during the scene.

The higher camera angle at 1:48 can suggest that the main character is exposed to his downfall and hence is intimidated by the crowd of characters of the story which have a higher degree of authority and power we can deduce this by their angelic look. This also means that the character being put under threat has nowhere to run and that the audience should perceive the police as having a much more infallible power as of the protagonist.

Camerawork: blog task

We need to be able to recognize and analyse the camera shots and angles when studying film or television. As ever with media, we need to be able to explain the effect this camerawork has on the audience.

Create a blogpost called 'Camerawork blog tasks'.

Watch this clip from Doctor Who and complete the tasks below:

Blog tasks:

1) Pick three camera shots from the Doctor Who scene and explain what type of shot it is and what meanings or effect they have on the audience.

  • Long shot at 00:52 which emphasizes who is in control in that scene
  • Establishing shot at 03:40 which zooms out of the setting and shows outer space to exaggerate the effect that is created
  • Close up at 02:14 to create tension and build suspense in the scene

2) Pick one camera angle that is used in the scene and explain the effect it has on the audience.

Birdseye view at 3:39 gives the audience a sense of how expansive and widescale the project shown is, making it clear to the audience how significant and important it is.

Mise-en-scene:

3) Pick one aspect of mise-en-scene from the scene and explain what connotations are being communicated to the audience.

The rings at the ends of the clip of blue light emitted are a convention of the sci-fi genre.

Denotation & Connotation x2

Mise-en-scene: Stranger Things

CARVALHO DA SILVA, Steven

WWW: This is a really impressive blog already – well done! It’s very clear that you are reading the examples on the GHS blog and making sure you are completing the tasks in almost all of your work. Your fruit bowl is outstanding (you’ve captured the winter palette perfectly) and your film poster analysis shows you are already getting to grips with the key concepts of media. This clearly demonstrates your potential both in technical and creative skills and media analysis. Keep up the good work!

EBI: Currently, your 10 questions work is unfinished (missing the last couple of answers) so that’s the first thing to resolve:

10 questions blog task: https://mediamacguffingcseyear1.blogspot.com/2022/09/welcome-to-gcse-media.html

Once you have completed those last two questions, the only other point I would make is making sure your connotation/analysis is the most detailed aspect of your work. It’s also vital to make sure you are using media terminology accurately when exploring deeper meetings. Finally, to aim for that grade 8 or 9 (which I totally agree with!) then you’ll need to be exploring all the different possible meanings and what potential effects a text may have on the audience. You also want to be taking on the extension tasks on the blog every week too.

LR: Post the missing/incomplete piece of work.

9) Why was the casting of Jodie Whittaker a significant moment in the history of Doctor Who?

She is the first female in doctor who.

10) What aspects of this scene do you think an audience might enjoy? List at least three things and explain why the audience would enjoy each aspect.

  • Special effects it makes the more interesting
  • The background makes it more entertaining
  • Camera angles make it more suspenseful

Then, create a new blogpost on your Media blog called ‘Blog feedback and Learner Response’. Copy and paste this WWW/EBI feedback into your blogpost then complete the LR tasks/questions below.

Reflect on your first month of Media. What do you feel is your strongest piece of work so far? What is your weakest? What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course?

I really enjoyed making the Key Concepts film poster analysis because it is my strongest piece of work however I do not believe I have a weakest piece of work as I try my hardest in every task. I believe that I need to work on my paragraph writing skills however other than that I am doing quite well.

Mise-en-scène

Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning ‘Putting on Stage’. It refers to the Media language used by the producer in their media product to communicate with their audience so…everything we see on screen. We can remember what this includes using the acronym CLAMPS:

  • Costume
  • Lighting
  • Actor placement and movement
  • Make-up
  • Props
  • Setting

Choose THREE aspects of mise-en-scene and write a short paragraph for each about the denotation and connotation and what is communicated to the audience.

Setting:
There is a laboratory which detonates to experiments. Its also night time which can demonstrate that a nightmare is coming. After this we are set in a house in the suburbs which shows an causal neighbourhood. After we get to a gloomy and bare road which detonates a demonic atmosphere

Costume:
In the first scene the man is wearing a lab coat conveys that he is a doctor, professor or science. Also he is wearing a tie which conveys professionalism. The children are wearing causal clothes which shows that they are ordinary children. The teenage girl is wearing a nightgown which links back to night time.

Lighting:
The scarlet and vivid title at the start shows that the show could be a thriller as the colour red is linked to danger. The dim flashing lights in the warehouse detonates exigency and something has gone wrong like a supernatural power or electrical cut this create the effect on the audience of tension and suspense. Also the lights are rapid which creates even more tension. The use of street lights and bike light illustrates the time of day.

Denotation and Connotation

Denotation

An image of young boy who has a serious look on his face who's wearing a blue faded shirt. Located in the top left corner of the advert is the logo of the water aid campaign.

Connotation

The boy is wearing a faded blue shirt which appears to be very old and dirty this can connote that he is not able to afford more clothes and may be living in poverty.

Analysis

The large text in the left hand side of the image reads 'Dig toilets  Not graves' since this text is bold and big it stands out also because of the colour. The audience can then really feel sympathy for the boy. In addition the boy has a serious look on his face denoting that they are being truthful about what they said in the large text.

Denotation

A yellow car (Mini GTS) which appears  to be going very fast on a race track above the car is some black text reading 'For little old ladies, it ain't'

Connotation

The car which is the colour yellow can connote happiness since yellow is the colour of the sunshine and is the brightest colour the human eye can see. Those who choose to drive a yellow car are fun, energetic, cheerful and are always eager to please others

Analysis

The black text above the car reads 'For little old ladies, it ain't' this quotation enforces the gender and elderly stereotypes that cars aren't for 'little old ladies' because they are for masculine men seeing as they are faster and cooler. Older female audience may take offence from this as they may even be passionate about cars.
